Library Ramblings

We are shoveling and shoveling just like everyone else, but we are also busy with our patrons and programs. At least the programs that DON'T get canceled!
Our Assistant Librarian and Catherine Christensen are busy working on the next Library & Lunch program. They have a fun, sweet program for everyone to enjoy!
We awarded 6 free puzzles to the lucky winners on National Puzzle Day! Judy, Jim, Josh, Cody, Dee, and Catherine all won 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles.
SNOW IS BEAUTIFUL!! That is our daily mantra! We had 12 preschoolers at the Library for preschool story time with our Assistant, Miss Sammy Jo. They are learning the alphabet in sign language.
We are looking forward to Early Out Fun Day which will be MOVIE DAY showing "Ice Age 3"!
We have multiple copies of the 2010 All Iowa Reads:"Driftless" by David Rhodes until the 22nd of Feb. Bye for now, Vicki

New Directorship

Sherry Waddell retires!

Sherry Waddell is retiring after 24 years of service to our community. The Anita Public Library Board of Trustees is proud to announce that Carrie Ohms is the new Librarian/Director.

An Open House/Retirement Party will be held on Sunday, January 25 from 2-4 p.m. at the Anita Community Center to honor Sherry for her 24 years of service to the library.

Veterans Day

Our Library & Lunch program On November 11th, 2008, centered on Veterans Day.

Billie Parker recounted his trip to Washington, D.C. and the new WWII monument. Larry Phillips gave the history of the American Legion, our Post 210 and the V.F.W. Norma Miller used our books from the Iowa/Anita history section and touched on several local veterans from past wars.

Lyle Chesnut shared his great-great-grandfathers discharge papers from the Civil War. All those present took a tour of other displays in the Library including Bob Hagen’s WWII Navy collection, Lyle Chesnut’s Korean War (Punch Bowl) photo and Tubby Morgan’s WWII rationing stamps.

We all learned something new about our Anita men and women who have served in honor of America and the freedom we take for granted.

Book Some Time Together

The Cass County Library Association consisting of the Atlantic, Griswold, Lewis, Massena, Cumberland and the Anita Public Libraries are sponsoring a county wide program to be held in January of 2009.
"Book Some Time Together" will promote staying at home one night with family and/or friends, turning the TV and computers off and enjoying time and other activities together.
More information will be available in the weeks ahead.

Cass County Library Association

The Cass County Library Association consists of the Atlantic, Cumberland, Griswold, Lewis, Massena and Anita Public Libraries. We meet once a month. We formed this association to share ideas, support each other and the jobs we do, report to the County Supervisors and promote our services to our patrons.

At our last meeting it was decided to have a county wide family reading night this winter. We will be planning this the next couple of months and have the details out to our communities by January.

EXTRA! EXTRA! Hear All About It!

Now you can check out audiobooks from your library at your home or office! As part of the WILBOR consortium, the Anita Public Library is offering audiobooks for its patrons to download and listen.

Your library card is the “key” to downloading the audiobooks, from any computer that is connected to the Internet, at any hour of the day. From a website you can browse or search for a title you’d like to listen to, log in with your library card number, and download the title to your computer. You can then listen to the book on your computer, or transfer to an mp3 player to listen.

This is a great way to make the library’s resources available to our users 24/7/365. You don’t have to come to the library building to check out the audiobook, and you don’t have to return it. The book automatically “returns” to the collection for someone else to borrow.

WILBOR's collection has fiction and nonfiction titles, as well as books for children and teens. Bestsellers and classics, history and humor, business and self help--you'll find them all in WILBOR. Books will check out for 1 week and the file will "expire" on your computer after 1 week, but when the books are transferred to an mp3 player you can take your time listening to them. Some titles can even be burned to CDs for your own, personal use.

The Anita Public Library is one of 84 libraries in western, central, and southern Iowa that participate in WILBOR. Spring

Yes, it is Spring and the Library is getting ready for our last "Early Out Fun Day" next week and
making plans for school visits and our summer library program "Catch the Reading Bug".
Did you know that the Anita Public Library had 58 children's programs last year with 1,474 attendance? WE MAKE READING FUN!

The "Game Nite" sponsored by the Tween Club was a success. This week we'll meet and plan for the summer. The "Teen Corner" is looking great. The "Tweens" will be finishing up the redecorating at this meeting, too.

Library & Dessert, May 13, 2008, is our last Library & Lunch activity until September. Brad Beaver will be here to tell us about his adventures with traveling and photography. Desserts are made by the Library Board of Trustees and staff. Time: 7-8:30pm

Tween Club

On February 15, several 5th, 6th & 7th graders met at the Anita Public Library to form a "young adult" group. The group chose the name "Tween Club". The kids that attended this meeting will be on the Board and will help plan and organize activities, redo the teen area and choose books and materials. The first activity the Board has planned is a "Game Nite" on March 7, 2008.

I'm really excited about this "Club" and what's even better? The kids are too!

Health & Wellness Center

Can you think of a better way to get fit in 2008 then to join the Health & Wellness Center in Anita, Iowa?
The Center opened October 2007 and has been going gung-ho ever since. We have close to 200 memberships and it's growing everyday. The Center has a full size basketball court; walking track; weight and walking machines; pool, fooseball and pingball tables; kitchenette; kids play area; and one of my favorites: a small library hosted by the Anita Public Library.
Just a few activites and coming attractions:
New Year's Resolution Club (weight loss club)
Yoga; Vollyball league; Baskeball; Tae Kwon Do; Kids Healthly Eating;
Dancing classes for couples (look out Dancing with Stars)

It's caucus time and I think there will be a big turn out. It's the best time to voice your opinions and have a say on who you want to run and possibly win the presidency.

It's also very, very cold. A perfect time to enjoy a cup of cocoa while reading or listening to a book.

At this time we are looking at the possibility of providing the public audio books to download from our website. Bringing access through Southern Iowa libraries will be a consortium of member libraries to bring this service to you.

Our first Library & Lunch of the new year will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2008, from Noon till 1pm. Dean Pierce, local prize winning poet and "mule"ologist will be our presenter.

Automatic Doors

The Library has installed automatic door openers this week. The openers were purchased with grants & gifts from the Schildberg Foundation, Cass County Endowment Fund, Wal-Mart and INS (Iowa Network Services). We hope this service will allow more people to visit and use the services we offer.
